Burglars steal the funniest things
EURO0001 11/12/08
It’s not surprising that burglary figures increase significantly around the Christmas holidays but a recent ‘break-in’ survey by leading PVC-U window and door supplier Europlas resulted in some very ‘unusual’ findings.
The study revealed that it isn’t always expensive items such as TVs and laptops that are top of the opportunist thieves’ wish lists. Gardening tools, a patio swing, an Elton John CD box set, a samurai sword and even a pet rabbit have all been reported as stolen.
It also seems apparent that many burglars skip dinner before heading out because other items that have disappeared after a break-in include a birthday cake, pot of jam, hot cross buns and even an un-cooked lasagne.
Jim Short, general manager, Europlas, said: “With the credit crunch upon us and a forecast rise in burglary figures, homeowners are increasingly concerned about the security of their homes.
“No matter what time of year it is, homeowners need to have effective security measures in place and with a few simple security checks, the residents of Torbay could be avoiding a lot of upset this Christmas.”
The Government recently predicted that the credit crunch would send crime figures spiralling and studies have revealed that out of 31 police forces across England and Wales, 19 have seen a significant increase in household burglaries.
As part of its ongoing campaign to highlight better home security, Europlas has made significant investment in its products to deliver an advanced range of secure PCV-U windows, doors and conservatories to keep homeowners and their possessions safe.
All products provide the most advanced security features including the police preferred ‘Secured by Design’ (SBD) accreditation. Secured by Design products are designed to resist burglary and have to meet exacting standards to carry the logo.
Jim said: “In the run up to Christmas, we are encouraging homeowners to be even more vigilant about their home security as it’s apparent that burglars are interested in items which may have more than just a monetary value.”
Low-maintenance PVC-U products from Europlas feature concealed hingebolts, multi-point locking systems or hookbolt locks as standard for extra security with a built-in anti-jacking system which ensures that it is impossible to lift a door off from the outside.
And as French Doors are often a favourite break-in point with thieves, French Doors from Europlas also feature a centre deadbolt which provides excellent protection against potential intruders.
